Dell Technologies Internal Resources
The Dell Team came to us asking to upgrade their internal resources page and their rewards tab. They asked for something that looked nicer and had more color in it. They gave me access to their design system and their DAM so I could use their assets. The project is technically for two different pages, but they wanted the layout to be similar enough they could utilize it for both.
Information Gathering:
Current State Review
The Dell Team gave me access to their internal reference pages so I can see the kinds of information they have and how they organize it. They often had different sections that have a list of links to pull up PDFs or go to a new page.
Discussing Parameters
While looking at this resources page, I noticed that they had pre-designed columns that I had to work within. Also, their website is varying shades of blue right now, but they wanted to break out of that. I used their design system colors, but also looked at creating new complimentary ones to see which the team liked better.
1st Draft
Creation:
I created a couple different options of cards with the option of images from their DAM to be put in as a header for each section. They had a wide selection of images they could easily pick so I thought this would be an easy and eye catching way to update the page. I gave them 2 and 3 column width options to see which worked better. I used a gray background on some because I was unsure if they had the power to change that, but I wanted to give them the options.
On the right of the image, I created a single column design because I wasn't sure how long the links were or how much information they would be putting in each section. It seemed like a break from what they were currently doing, but it could add more color and help accommodate longer link titles.
Review
The first review uncovered more information about their future state and the direction they are interested in going. They wanted an option that had the flexibility to have ads, so I designed in solid color headers sot hat the images in the ads wouldn't be overpowering the page and making it too busy.
Something they loved was a "most used" links option at the top of the page. I try to design these pages with power users involved. If you come to this page to use the same link over and over again, it would be helpful to have those at the top of the page.
Final Draft
Dell is a very visual client so they needed high fidelity images so they could really see what the final page would look like. I took screen captures of the current sites so the headers were filled out and not just placeholder boxes. They loved the direction I went and now use these options in their resources page and their rewards tab. I loved working with Dell and look forward to working with them again.
